THE STONE SCULPTURE
Stone sculpture. Sandstone. Southern Kazakhstan. XII-XIII cc. |
Objects of monumental art of Middle ages are represented by a
large collection of stone anthropoid sculpture. They were a part of burial and funeral
structures of turkic tribes of that period. Stone sculptures were installed on ancient
cemetries and close to ritual constructions. Interpretation of these sculptures differs.
On one opinion, they depicted defeated enemies, on the other - turks themselves. Museum collection includes 35 stone sculptures, manufactured in VI-XIII cc. and differs in iconography. |
